Over the break we will be giving a home visit to each student and their families. If you have pictures or letters you would like passed on to the students and their families during these visits, please send them to me directly at sadiec7@gmail.com. Several of you have already contacted us regarding gifts for the children this holiday season. If you have not and would like to give something extra please let us know; this can be arranged prior to the home visit. We look forward to checking in with each family and providing you with an update!

Thank you all for another successful school year!

Join Our Team!

As an umbrella organization, Passion Projects is always looking for new individuals to work with on projects! Specifically, we are interested in hearing from people who have already been working with a grassroots organization to develop a project and are looking for a structure in which to grow. Although ownership of each project is maintained by the founder, you would join a network of social entrepreneurs to help you expand your vision and help execute it!

We have created a document below with further information for those who might be interested. Feel free to get in touch with us via facebook or email. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sponsorship Update: 2017 Term One

The first term of the 2017 school year at Maua English Medium School has come to an end! All students returned home Tuesday, May 30th for a month long break. The second term will commence on July 3rd.

During this term I was able to introduce some of our new sponsored students to their sponsor(s) through pictures I was sent. The children who had this opportunity loved receiving their pictures and were eager to share them with their friends. This struck interest in nearly all of the students to be able to possibly see pictures of their own sponsors. Whether for the first time or repeated, the children always enjoy updated photos. I encourage anyone interested to send me a picture of you or your family so that I can pass them on to the students as a keepsake from the ones sponsoring their education. Pictures can be sent to me at sadiec7@gmail.com.

Over the next month or so I will be collecting hand written letters and/or drawn pictures from all of your individual sponsored children. I look forward to sharing these with you and giving the children an opportunity connect with you as their sponsors.

Additionally, Update Pictures and Report Cards are now available for you on the database!! Please take the chance to look through these as the kids have been working very hard to keep their grades up!! The report cards can be found in the photo gallery called "Report Cards". Please be advised that this is the last time report cards will be uploaded as images. Moving forward, we will be saving these all in the documents tab along with any letters, drawings, home visit information, and/or other deliverable documents. This will improve some of the quality issues we have seen in the past :)

Lastly, there will be an additional upgrade to the database!! This one is going to allow for photos to be kept much more organized. Currently, you may have noticed that photos can be unorganized in terms of when they were uploaded. We are changing the sorting function within the galleries to sort the photos by when they were uploaded. The newer photos will appear at the top of the gallery. This will be very beneficial for sponsors as it will be much easier to see the students growth throughout the year! As always, if you have any recommendations of how we can make the database better, please let us know! The changes come from people like you giving us feedback :)

Enjoy the pictures and report cards folks!

Save Africa Children's Home: An Update From the Field

Thoughts on Tanzania.

Written by: Lois Smith.

Lois and Larry have been sponsoring two children through the Save Africa Sponsorship Program since 2014. Their son, Carter Smith, has been working on a health research project near Arusha for the past 6 months. Last week, they had the opportunity to stop by Save Africa for a visit, as well as the Amani School where the sponsored children attend classes.

Carter Smith with Annie and Anuari, two siblings who are sponsored to go to Amani School.

Carter Smith with Annie and Anuari, two siblings who are sponsored to go to Amani School.

Larry and I just returned from a 2 week adventure in Tanzania. When Carter chose to extend his research stay there by 10 weeks, leveraging the opportunity for a trip to Tanzania made sense for us also. In addition to meeting many of academics and ex-pats in Carter’s world there, we did an amazing safari and made our way to Usa River where Martha worked at the Save Africa Childrens’ Home and with the help of family and friends, arranged for 11 of them to attend the Amani School there. We wanted to appreciate what Martha’s experience as a volunteer there would have been like.

Usa River is about 25 kms from Arusha, best known for its proximity to Mt. Kilimanjaro. Our experience was moving. Arriving at the orphanage, Carter, Larry and I were immediately greeted by the children with big smiles, each vying for our attention. The house is small with 2 bedrooms outfitted with triple bunk beds and bins marked with their names. The classroom was basic with tables and benches and large blackboards. A large, colourful map of the world was painted on one wall. There were a number of staff/volunteers amongst the kids, both inside and out. They spoke Swahili and little English. The kitchen was outside with an open fire and a cook who presumably prepares all their food. We were taken to the see the flushing toilets in an outdoor building, a feature Martha and friends were instrumental in making happen! The playground consisted of a swing set, a muddy area (rainy season just ending) and a few soccer balls. Laundry was drying on the fences. The kids were very cute, confident and eager to show us their notebooks. They loved posing for photos! Most were wearing their uniform, including a sweater which seemed too warm to be wearing or a rugger shirt in the Tanzania colours. A few others were sporting more creative ensembles like a ballet tutu or a Detroit sweatshirt!

We asked to be taken to Amani School, which many of the kids you support, attend. It was a substantial school with a large playground, a games court, a grassy area and many portable classrooms. The administrator of the school came outside to meet with us and she offered to locate some of “our kids” so we could meet them and take a few photos. We were really impressed with the quality of the physical aspects of the school. Their uniforms were similar but with different coloured shirts. They were dressed in the same warm sweaters and most were wearing backpacks, even at recess!

We had conflicting emotions about our brief visit. We wanted to see what Martha’s summer in Usa River might have looked like. We wanted to meet the kids that stole her heart. But, is showing up for an hour’s visit really fair to them? Does the coming and going of “mzungus” (foreigners), add any value or does it cause confusion and distraction that could actually be detrimental for the kids? We struggled a bit with this. I think it only took Martha a few minutes after her first arrival at the orphanage to see that for these kids to have a future, access to a proper school was essential. We came to the same conclusion quickly. I am happy we were able to make this visit, albeit brief. I am happy we are providing a few kids with the possibility of a future.

Afroplan Sponsorship Program

Witten by: Corey Reid, Founder of Passion Projects Intl.

Hello!

As many of you know I have just returned from Arusha, Tanzania where I completed a check-in visit with Afroplan Foundation and our sponsorship program. I am very excited to be able to provide all of you with an update of the Passion Projects Afroplan Sponsorship Program. Further, I am also going to update you on the new developments at Afroplan Foundation, the local Tanzanian NGO we work very closely with.

Sponsorship Program

Each visit I would see a large amount of the children, however some would be too busy playing with friends or in the classroom that I would miss them. However, over the combinations of all my visits I can say that I got to see each kid and spend a little time with them. Part of my work throughout this visit was ensuring that each child had sufficient supplies for the next little while. This is frequently monitored by Sadie Clarke, our sponsorship communications manager, it just turned out that I was in Arusha around the same time as she planned to do her check in on the supplies. We ended up buying a large list of different supplies and necessities for many of the students. They are always so excited to get new gifts or supplies, especially when its shoes and sweaters! This was very exciting for me to see. With the program fees being the way they are, we are able to have some emergency funds to cover these expenses. This is very special as it keeps the program sustainable. Further, it allows us to provide even more care for the children as they have the support from the program to be able to have the supplies they need to excel!

There were no surprises around the Passion Projects Afroplan Sponsorship Program. That’s always the best result you can get. Living in Tanzania has taught me to be prepared for anything. Things going good and as expected is the best kind of news you can get. I always say this but I will say it again, Mr. Frank is an angel and the work he does is honest, humble work. I am so happy to be able to work with him and support his local Tanzanian NGO, Afroplan Foundation.

Maua School Update
It was also very exciting to see the new developments that were being worked on at Maua English Medium School. They have continued to complete a more modern kitchen, and have started and are close to finishing three new classrooms. Lastly, they will build a large modern hall which will be used for dining and activities. This is very exciting because completion of these developments will get them to the point of being completely done with development of the primary school. This will allow them to start on the secondary school which is planned to be ready by the time our children start looking to enter into the secondary school system. Great news! There are more pictures of some of the developments on each of your sponsorship program database accounts.

How will Passion Projects be involved?
As per the fee structure for sponsorship, the emergency fund is allotted for two things. One was the supplies the children need, as discussed above. The second was meant to circulate back into the local Tanzanian NGO as it is part of Passion Projects' mission to support  local NGO’s. This means that over the three years the sponsorship program has been operating, some money has been saved for instances like this.

The total cost of the new land and a few buildings to start development will likely be upwards of 15,000 USD. There plans to be contributions from Passion Projects International and from Nafasi Project (Emily Lyons American non-profit organization). However, even together the amount of money will definitely not cover the total costs. Therefore, I will look to fundraise in the future to help this fund become more attainable. The details are not certain yet, however, the time is coming.

Passion Projects International has submitted it's CRA application documents. They have been submitted for two months, and from what colleagues in the non-profit sector have told me is that I likely won’t hear anything for four months at least. My hope is that the CRA approves first time around, however that is not commonly the case. It is very common for more back and forth communication throughout the process prior to them finalising the approval. I have been advised that the timeline looks more like 8 months to a year. So, in short, the timeline is in the hands of the Canadian government. The wish is that I can obtain CRA approval prior to fundraising for the land. However, if that does not happen then the fundraising will have to continue, it will just be more difficult.

I want to be clear that I don’t tell you this in hopes that you will be interested in fundraising. I tell you this as I see the sponsors as being part of the core of Passion Projects International. For that reason, I think that the sponsors should be informed on the details of what is going on within the organization. Besides, you are already providing so much support through the sponsorship program and the model we have created over the years.

Pictures!!
Well, that’s the news for this trip! Sadie will continue to frequent both Afroplan and Maua English Medium School as the Sponsorship Communications Manager, so be sure to connect with her! Lastly, and probably the most important, there are a few new pictures on the database for your enjoyment!

I highly encourage you to check them out as it makes it all much more special. Let me know if you forget your log-in information! Also, continue to follow and join our cause on Facebook. You spreading the message of the gifts you give can really go a long way! If you share the sponsorship with your family or friends, please provide me with their emails so they can receive updates as well!

Thank You!
I thank you all for the involvement and support in Passion Projects International - Afroplan Sponsorship Program. Each child is truly grateful for the opportunity you have given them. It is very regular for them to ask about you. “And where’s my friend sir?", "Can I see a picture of my sponsor?”. It is very beautiful the curiosity they have for you and your families.

On the last day I was there, there were many tears and sad faces. It’s always a sad goodbye. It doesn’t get easier, especially as the trips get shorter. However, I have found comfort in knowing that although I can’t be around all the time, I am truly fighting for the best life for each of the children. I hope that gives you comfort in knowing that your support is with the right organization.

Asante Sana,
